“Although nature commences with reason and ends in experience it is necessary for us to do the opposite, that is to commence with experience and from this to proceed to investigate the reason.”
Chasing Ghosts is a series of photographs portraying locations reputed to be haunted from across Eastern Canada and the United States.
Over the course of several years, I had the opportunity to travel with Maritime Paranormal to private and landmark locations extending from Louisburg, Nova Scotia to Maritime Paranormal is a research group spanning the Maritime provinces, whose members study and document reports of paranormal phenomena; specifically ghosts and hauntings.
My interest in the paranormal began with my experiences with sleep paralysis during adolescence and early adulthood. Sleep paralysis is a naturally-occurring phenomenon where the experient loses the ability to move or speak during the transition between wakefulness and sleep. This is often accompanied by terrifying hallucinations, and is the source of the Old Hag folklore, among many others around the world.
I’ve always been drawn to remnants of the past. Through my work with MP, I’ve been very fortunate to be guest to several non-profits, including nationally and provincially designated historic sites. This privilege has provided me with a unique opportunity to explore and photograph these historically significant locations and discover their stories on a more intimate level.
